This blog post summarises the events leading to Facebook suspending Cambridge Analytica from its platform.
- in 2015 Facebook learned that a University of Cambridge Psychology professor, Dr Aleksandr Kogan broke platform policies by passing data collected through a facebook psychological profile app he had developed to Cambridge Analytica and Christopher Wylie of Eunoia Technologies.
- the app “thisisyourdigitallife” offered personality prediction and captured users city or residence (set in their profile), content they liked and shared, and limited information (depending on privacy settings) about their friends
- approximately 270,000 downloaded the app.
- facebook advised the Cambridge Analytica and other recipients to certify that they had destroyed this data, but subsequenlty found our in March 2018 that these certifications were incorrect.
